I am not going back and individually tagging all my entries.
I am also not putting an Adult Content flag on my whole journal - since as a mom I think it is the job of a child's parents to moderate what their kid is exposed to. While reporting a post to LJAbuse might be quicker and easier, I think THAT just encourages the whole excessive censorship in the name of The Children. So what I ask is:

If there is a post that you come across that you feel needs to be flagged, please comment here (screened) and I will take it under consideration.

1. My username is _____ because ____.
anathemad. because Anathema Device is my favorite character from Good Omens, and I needed a username that was not taken.

2. My name is _____ because ______.
Michele because my father blurted that out after I was born when the nurse asked what they were naming me. This is after my parents had discussed NOT naming me that as my first cousin is named Michele as well.

3. My journal is titled ____ because ____.
Got MLK? because my initials are MLK... and the Got Milk? Ads...

4. My friends page is called ____ because ____.
friends, because sometimes I am just not that witty.

5. My default userpic is ____ because _____.
usually just the ANATHEMA typeface, but currently a pic of Ben and I camping, as it is a really happy memory, and something I am trying to focus on all the time.

There was a question in a homeschooling community about who your children socialize with - other HS kids, kids that go to schools, or family...

My reply:
All of the above, as well as just the other people in the world. I do not limit who they can spend time with based on schooling, or age for that matter, so some of their better conversations happen with the people we interact with every day - learning about Japan from the woman that owns the sushi restaurant, or the way the machine works at the dry cleaners. During the day they tend to play with other HS kids, but after school lets out they play in the neighborhood with the traditionally schooled kids. Family is family, and we spend as much time together as we can, but we are fairly spread out.

I guess our view on socialization is that true socialization happens when you interact with the world, not just a small aged based peer group.

I never got along with, nor fit in with other kids my own age in large groups. Sure I had friends who were my age, but the were often a matter of convenience rather than true friendships. It probably took until high school until I started being friends with people I really liked and had things in common with. And many of those friends were up to 9 years older than me, and some younger as well.

As adults we don't restrict our friendships and interactions based on age. And if that is the type of socialization I am trying to prepare my children for, I am trying to teach that level of socialization now as well.

Encouraging this sort of socialization is not exclusive to homeschoolers by any means. As a matter of fact not all homeschoolers do it, but those kids that are well rounded are the ones that I general enjoy spending time with.

Ok my friends. It is the time of year where I have to decide what I am doing with the kids for next year. I am not unhappy with K12, but at the same time, do not think it is perfect. So I am in exploration mode. I am just not an unschooler, so I need something more organized. SPAM me with your suggestions. Tell me your opinions on specific curricula. Edumacate me on the facts and foibles. Do you love it but hate the cost? Love the math, but hate the science? Do you build your own? Oh, and it must be secular.

I am currently using K12. On the list I am looking at this very moment: Laural Springs, Oak Meadow, Clonlara, & Calvert.

Comments are screened, but I am also available via email or IM.

At what do you think a child should be allowed outside unsupervised (as in no parent outside with the, just other kids, and not in a fenced in/contained area)?

My brother took our father, step-mom, [livejournal.com profile] cassiusdrow and I to dinner this evening, to celebrate our (my dad & I) birthdays. After driving by it a number of times and hearing wonderful reviews I made us reservations at Coccola. First let me say that the location is crap. Sitting between an industrial park and a gas station, a restaurant of any sort of worth is the last thing expected in that location in suburban NJ. The outside really gives no hint for what waits inside. My immediate thought was that this was something that [livejournal.com profile] bronxelf_ag001 would enjoy - it was well designed, including seating space & bathroom. (FYI - elf, it was designed by David Schultz of DAS Architects out of Philly - yes I asked, I liked it that much) The service was good, and the owner Nino spent as much time in the front of the house making sure everything was as it should be, as in the kitchen.

food details behind the cut )

Now I am full, tired, and thrilled that no one seemed to have any major complaints (a rare, rare thing when my family goes out together).

And... be aware that there is a bot going around directing people to username.on.nimp.org saying that friends-only posts have been stolen.

I am glad I smelled something fishy and googled first.

My mortality is beating me in the head like a pinata. Apparently like a donkey shaped one as at 5am this is what I woke up with playing endlessly in my head. No, I have NO idea either...

This is only made slightly better by the fact that I just spent the last half hour by watching various videos of said earworm on youtube. Here is hoping I can fit a nap into my day!
